The botanical name of tomato is Solanum Lycopersicum belonging to the Nightshade family. But do you know where the origin of this super veggie is? Southern and Central America is the origin region of tomatoes. However, today, it is grown in almost every country, including India. 

India is the second-largest producer of tomatoes. After potatoes, India highly produced tomatoes. Requirements for Tomato Cultivation In India 

  • Climate 

The warm climate and well-drained soils are the major requirements of tomato cultivation in India. The warm season is the ideal season for the high growth of tomatoes considered as a warm-season crop. The temperature of 20-25℃ is the best for tomato cultivation. For the excellent quality red colour tomato, the 21-24℃ temperature is perfect. Tomato farming needs 400-600 mm rainfall, 15-25°C harvesting temperature, and 10-15°C sowing temperature. Temperature above 43°C (intense heat) is terrible for the tomato plant as due to extreme heat, the plant burns. Simultaneously, less 13°C and greater than 35°C decreases tomato red colour production ratio. 

  • Soil 

Tomatoes grow very well on different soil types, but they ideally grow on deep, well-drained soils with high organic content and good drainage ability. Sandy loam to clay, black soil, and red soil with proper drainage is best suited for tomato cultivation in India. For the high growth, soil PH should be in 6-7 with good drainage property. High acidic soils are worse for tomato cultivation, so avoid them. For early crops, light soil is profitable, and for heavy yields, clay loam and silt-loam soils are beneficial. 

Land Preparation 

Tomato requires a well pulverized and levelled soil for the tomato plantation. To mix the soil to a fine tilth, plough the land 4 to 5 times. After that, complete the planking process, which makes the soil level. At the end of the ploughing process, add decomposed cow dung correctly. A tomato transplant is done on a raised bed. Raised bed prepare up to 80 – 90 cm width. For the good soil, destroy the soil-borne pathogen, pest, and organism, and soil solarization is done. For solarization, mulch is the best option which is a plastic film. This transparent sheet absorbs radiation, increases soil temperature, and kills pathogens.
