How to Check And Solve Ethernet Network Cable Problems

Facing troubles with your ethernet network cables? Here’s how you can check problems with your wired connections and fix them. Whether you use Cat6 Ethernet Cables, Cat6a Ethernet Cables, or Cat5e Ethernet Cables, a single fault may disrupt the whole connectivity; therefore, it becomes imperative to find and troubleshoot the ethernet network cable problems. 

Physical Damage to Ethernet Cable

An ethernet cable becomes faulty when it sustains physical damage. A common reason for physical damage is furniture. When furniture flattens the ethernet cable, it results in loss of electromagnetic induction. In such cases, the outcome is more crosstalk and noises.

Faulty/Weak Connectors

Faulty or weak connectors make your ethernet cable unseated. Connectors catch faults when you regularly pull the cables in and out of the connectors. 

Fluorescent Ballast Interference

If your ethernet cable lies somewhere near or on the top of fluorescent ballast, the ballast interference will significantly lower the performance of your ethernet cable. 

Old cables

Your ethernet cables are prone to shrinkage and expansion because cables in the building plenum get cooled and heated on a daily basis. This regular shrinkage and expansion degrade copper’s conductivity. In such cases, replace your ethernet cables. 

Losing connection regularly

Plug the cable into the adapter and see if the light turns on or not. If the light doesn’t turn on, it means the problem lies either in your adapter or cable. In case of bad connections or no connection, a pop-up will appear on your PC’s screen reading “no connection” or “network connection is lost”; the appearance of these error messages means there’s a connectivity issue. To fix this issue, ensure that the cable has been properly connected. If there’s no problem with the connection, it means the issue lies in your ethernet cable. 

Slow or intermittent connections

If you are persistently facing issues of slow connections or your connection continues to drop now and then, chances are that your ethernet cable is damaged. Because of this wear and tear, the internal wire connection gets broken and results in poor connections. 

Connections also become unstable if the ethernet network cable is either worn or bent. In such cases, you can remove bents by straightening the ethernet cable with your hands.  The length of the ethernet cable also impacts its performance. Long ethernet cables usually create frame timings problems. 

Ethernet cable faults and wiggle magic

Sometimes, you can re-establish a lost connection simply through a wiggle. If you deploy this technique on a regular basis, it means your connector is damaged. 

When a fault exists in Network Ecosystem

If your connection works smoothly by replacing the ethernet cables now and then, it means there’s a dire need to inspect your network. The three most common types of network issues are:

  1. a) Connectivity: Faulty cables are the sole cause of connectivity issues. To check cable faults, re-plug it into another device, and if by doing so, the portlight does not blink, it means the problem lies in your cable, and you need to replace it immediately. 
  2. b) Slow connections and poor speed: If your ethernet is working smoothly and its speed is slow, thoroughly check your cable for any bends or damages. In case of bends, try to straighten it with your hands. In case you fail to do so, change your ethernet cable. As far as the damaged cable is concerned, the only solution is a replacement. 

c) Continuity: The continuity issue is related to bad connectors. Check your ethernet cables for cuts as they too affect continuity. Furthermore, electromagnetic interference also results due to damaged jackets. There are several devices out there to detect interferences with cable; use them to fix continuity issues.
