What Is The Reason Behind Kala Bhairava Jayanthi

What Is Kala Bhairava Jayanthi?

Kala Bhairava Jayanthi or Kala Bhairava Ashtami is the birthday of Kala Bhairava, the supreme ruler of time. This falls on the Krishna Paksha Ashtami or 8th waning Moon in the lunar month of Kartik (Nov-Dec). Kala means time, and Bhairava is the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva; thus, Kala Bhairava is the God of time, who controls time for the entire universe. Also known as Maha Kalashtami or Kalashtami, this auspicious day is celebrated with great pomp all over India, especially by the Shaivites (followers of Shiva).

Legend Behind Kala Bhairava Jayanthi

According to Shiva Purana, once Vishnu and Brahma were debating on who is the supreme God among them. To put an end to their dispute and prove that Shiva is the supreme among all gods, he assumed the form of an infinite column of fire in front of them. Brahma and Vishnu decided that whoever finds the top or bottom of the light will be regarded as the supreme one. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a boar and moved downwards, while Lord Brahma assumed the form of a swan and flew upwards to find the bottom and top of the fire column, respectively.

When Vishnu could not find the bottom end, he returned and accepted his defeat, whereas Brahma convinced a Ketaki flower to falsely support him in witnessing the top of the flame. When Shiva appeared out of the flame, he created Bhairava from his third eye to destroy the pride and ego of Brahma. Bhairava, thus ordered by Lord Shiva, severed Brahma’s fifth head, which falsely committed of witnessing the flame’s origin. Thus, the very purpose of the advent of Bhairava was to annihilate falsehood, negativity, and evil forces.
