Pakistani telecom authorities blocked Wikipedia in Pakistan after the platform refused to remove “sacrilegious” content from its website.
A spokesman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said that we gave a deadline of 48 hours to Wikipedia for the removal of sacrilegious content from their platform. Still, they failed to remove the content in the given time. So, that’s why the authorities took steps and blocked Wikipedia in Pakistan.
The PTA spokesman further said that we are in contact with the officials of Wikipedia if they’ll remove the blasphemous content from Wikipedia then we will unblock their website to Pakistani people.
He also said that Wikipedia officials aren’t responding quickly to a request for comment.
On Wednesday Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said
“degraded” Wikipedia services in the Muslim-majority country for not complying with its order to remove the “unlawful” content. Blasphemy is a sensitive issue in Pakistan, whose laws condone capital punishment for anyone convicted of affronting Islam.”
